Deadlier than the MaleOne of the many take offs of the Bond movies, starring Richard Johnson (originally considered for the part of 007) as Bulldog Drummond. Two executive members of an oil company die under suspicious circumstances; it appears that they were killed by two female assassins. It takes a lady killer to track down killer ladies, so the company puts Bulldog Drummond on their trail. He follows the ladies from London to the Mediterranean, and finds out that they are working for a crime ring led by a madman who wants to become the most powerful man in the world by laying his hands on all oil reserves (not such a bad idea). This criminal mastermind may not be a nutcase, but don't expect anything more than a caricature (albeit an enjoyable one) of a Bond movie; the story also involves plastic explosives in the form of a hairpin, a game of chess using gigantic motorized pieces and - I'm not making this up - cigars shooting backwards. Elke Sommer and Sylva Koscina are probably the sexiest pair of killers in history and Johnson is quite convincing as the 007 substitute, but the script is episodic and the action moments pale in comparison to what the Bond franchise has to offer in this aspect. In the end the film feels more like an extended (and raunchier) episode of The Avengers than a Bond take off. The use of female assassins and the emphasis on torture led to censorship problems, earning the movie an 'X-rating’. The fascinating title was taken from a poem by Rudyard Kipling called The Female of the Species (this was the working title of the movie): When the Himalayan peasant meets the he-bear in his pride, He shouts to scare the monster, who will often turn aside. But the she-bear thus accosted rends the peasant tooth and nail. For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.
